So, I’m trying to add some extended functionality to MRTG to grab port labels from HP switches. To do this, I need to find the enterprise OID that is assigned to HP and add it to mrtg’s cfgmaker script so that it knows the HPs support ifAlias. Quick search on google and tada! And that site has a link to IANA with a listing of all enterprise OIDs.

sudo is so cool
sudo allows non-superusers to do superuser things without knowing the superuser password.
betka@somehost betka $ sudo /etc/init.d/dhcp restart Password: * Stopping dhcpd... [ ok ] * Starting dhcpd... [ ok ]
sasser
Sasser has made it to campus. This is just what we need during the last week of classes. Hard to believe this many people are missing a patch released almost a month ago. Microsoft has an advisory on sasser.
Update (5/03/04): I’m just as much a loser as everyone else. I had 16 machines (out of about 1000) that were unpatched. Thirty lashes with a wet noodle for me.
updates, updates, updates
Why am I up at 2:19 am on a Saturday morning? No, I’m not drunk. I’ve got a whole laundry list of things to do at work.
in case anyone else needs this
This is too damn much work.

patch, patch, patch
New MS security updates yesterday, get yourself patched. Windows Update was a little pokey this morning, but that’s almost to be expected.
On an unrelated note, I got to drive the wife’s Camaro Z/28 to Danville last night. Driving the 97 Accord four banger (peppy, but front wheel drive and geared a little odd) and the Dakota v-8 (uh, it’s a 4×4, no speed demon here) all the time, I sometimes forget how much fun interstate on/off ramps really CAN be. Made for a pretty good birthday present.
redhat be gone!
VirusScan Enterprise sucks
Well, I guess I shouldn’t really fault VirusScan, this is more of a Microsoft Installer issue than anything.
A little background: We run the campus site licensed VirusScan Enterprise on all our lab machines (and all of the admin machines as well). We started the year with version 7.0, then 7.1 came out. This is when things got wacky.
First, I built a custom install package with Installation Designer that had the same settings as we used before. Some workstations got the settings again, some defaulted back to the defaults (update weekly, Friday 5 pm), and a few even lost the scanner service completely!

spongebob spam?
Seems that we have been getting lots of hits on www.hoopeston.k12.il.us from hotmail and other mail clients asking for 1 specific spongebob related picture. Seeing as that is wasting our bandwidth for someone elses purposes, I followed the lead of others and replaced the picture:
We’ll see how much mail I get….
