Stories

So, I’ve told these stories enough that I need to write them down and in honor of Robin’s 1 week “birthday” tonight, here they are.
(Medical details and terms after the break.)

  • Yes, Alisha’s water broke at the shower the other House Officers threw for her. They wanted her to go directly to the hospital, so she called me at home and had me come get her. I almost thought it was some kind of evil shower gag to get some help loading up all the gifts. I was wrong.
After picking her up, we came back home to call Labor & Delivery and they said not to come in until the contractions were 5 minutes apart. So we watched the rest of the Illinois vs. Purdue game and timed them. We headed in about 20 minutes after the game was over.
  • After she got her epidural in, I decided to take a short walk down to the House Officer office and thank the ones on duty for the gifts and the help. I took a few minutes walking back. As I walked back into the room, the nurse was getting done checking her progress and said “I think I know what I just felt, but let me get a second opinion.” Another nurse came in, checked and said “Lets get a sono”. With the portable sono, they couldn’t get a clear picture at the bottom, but got a fairly clear image of the face…up by the ribs. The Nurse Midwife comes in, checks and says “Yep, that’s a butt, you know what that means.” The baby is frank breech, so off to the operating room for a cesarean section.
  • After what seemed like an hour, but was probably closer to 20 minutes, I got to go into the operating room. Dressed in scrubs, a mask, a hairnet and booties for my shoes, I held Alisha’s hand while two OB docs worked, assisted by the nurse midwife. After some pushing, shoving and a doc saying “This baby has a big butt”, they told me to stand up and announce the sex. With a little shifting, I saw it was a boy. All the staff were amazed, they were certain what they were feeling was a girl’s bottom. After the standard check under the warmer in the room, I followed Robin to the nursery for weighing and on to another warmer. I then returned to the operating room to hold Alisha’s hand while they closed the incision.
  • A little after midnight, we returned to the room, called the new grandparents and awaited the return of Robin from the nursery. Shortly after he came in, the house officer on duty dropped in and snapped some pictures of me holding him.
